Coil Relief Sculptures–Fifth Grade

For this lesson, my cooperating teacher took the helm the first day or two, and I was able to teach this lesson for the next group. We discussed Native American pottery coil-building techniques and reviewed the students’ own coil pots they made in elementary. Taking the coil-building technique, we married it to their already familiar slab-building techniques to create something entirely new for this project. Students created their own unique sculptures which you can see below!
